Text on reverse of first day cover reads:

BATTLE OF BRITAIN: SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE Mk I

Nimble and fast, the Spitfire was the pride of the Royal Air Force — half of a superb pair of airplanes which saved England. Together with the Hurricane, the Spitfire was used with deadly efficiency to knock the enemy out of the sky, grappling most often with the German Messerschmitt BflOdE. Though the enemy plane could climb more rapidly, the beautiful Spitfire had the edge in speed — three hundred seventy miles-per-hour — and could outrun the Messerschmitt, if necessary. The Spitfire depicted on the stamp was flown by Lieutenant Deere of 54 Squadron, based at Hornchurch, Essex, England, during the battle. Like all Spitfires, it was equipped with eight 303-caliber machine guns.
